The Real Outrage

A careful reading of the Pope's speech reveals that his insult to Moslems has been radically misunderstood. In fact the heart of his argument is this:
Only thus do we become capable of that genuine dialogue of cultures and religions so urgently needed today. In the Western world it is widely held that only positivistic reason and the forms of philosophy based on it are universally valid. Yet the world's profoundly religious cultures see this exclusion of the divine from the universality of reason as an attack on their most profound convictions.
To paraphrase: if the West wants to be able to talk to irrational Moslem fundamentalists, its going to have to embrace its own irrational Christian fundamentalists to do so.

It seems to me that this is a good deal more insulting than his choice to introduce the discussion by quoting a couple of lines from a debate between a 14th century Byzantine emperor and a Persian nobleman.

What are they insulted about? That they are called violent? Well, they are violent. Most of the world terrorism comes from radical Muslims and from Muslim terrorist states. I don't see what's insulting: it's true and it may hurt them, but so what? Perhaps they should consider changing their behavior if they don't want to feel insulted.

All of Eastern Europe was ruled by Ottoman Turks. Tey were violent and very often so in the name of Allah. For Allah they were kidnapping male children under 10, converting them and making them soldiers. All the elite corps of the Sultan (the Janissaries) wree forced converts.

The history of Eastern Europe where I was born is chock-full of massacres and beheadings in the name of Allah. The national holiday of several Eastern European countries is the day they got rid of the Turks. And you're telling me they're not violent? They are violent: in the name of Allah.
