a few years ago i went to a seminar on the neural mechanisms of 'attention'. the researcher was teaching monkeys how to utilize 'covert attention', focusing their awareness on objects at the periphery of vision. in this way the monkeys selectively enhanced neural activity associated with the object at the edge of the visual field, without ever taking their gaze off the main goal.
with practice, i too hope to attain this feat.
